People would never ask for any random moron with no knowledge of the job whatsoever to perform surgery on them or a loved one. They wouldn’t want a random moron to update their plumbing, either. But to run a country? Control a nuclear arsenal? Duhhh, why not? The United States is truly exceptional in its stupidity.

One of the scariest things about Trump’s first year isn’t how “abnormal” he is. It’s how “normal” he’s making other conservatives look. Blood-drenched war criminals like Bill Kristol, David Frum, John McCain, & even George W. Bush are now viewed as “principled” people. Make no mistake, Trump isn’t a fluke or an aberration. He’s the avatar of reactionary conservatism, corporate greed, abhorrent bigotry, purposeful ignorance.

BUT this journal is not solely about Trump and his supporters. It’s about the corrupt society and culture, rife with the pervasive moral rot that created them. Yet they still represent everything shitty about the USA and they’re fucking proud of it. Neither reason, evidence, empathy, nor compassion sways them. It’s a waste of time. Treat ‘em like shit. The United States was never great, and never will be great.

But you know what else is sad about this?

The United States of America COULD be the most powerful, most ingenious force for good ever devised by man. We could, if not eliminate, at least drastically reduce hunger and poverty around the world, halt the spread of infectious diseases, and provide equal rights for all of its citizens.

…But we don't, because assholes believe that such power & resources should be used only to regulate the private actions of citizens, in accordance with a small group of Christian zealots' unhinged beliefs, and to deny rights to “others.” We could enforce peace around the world, but we don't, because these same people believe that American power should exist only for the sake of being powerful and to protect the privileges of those in power. We could accomplish many things; WE could be a beacon of hope and the model of compassion and humanity, but we are busy arguing about the marginal tax rate and the evils of taxing the hard-earned capital gains and inheritances of the wealthiest couple hundred people in the world.

This is the dogma of “American Exceptionalism”– endless boasting about how “great” America is compared to the shittiest places on the planet:

It's all too obvious that the military, police, and federal law enforcement agencies attract people who like pushing other people around and inflicting harm wherever they go. It’s been like that for decades.

A LOT of people in law enforcement share the same dangerous notion that they're engaged in a battle with “civilians.” They fail to see themselves as part of society. Same with people in the military. If there's one thing the military and law enforcement share in this country, it’s disdain and contempt for the civilian population. These self-righteous assholes see themselves as wolves and the rest of us as sheep.

I'm so fucking tired of the military being treated like a sacred institution above criticism. Our military is an economic parasite on our standard of living in this country. The military is sucking our economy dry. We pay for endless fabricated wars-for-profit. It’s a vast, very expensive killing machine that has no interest in the health, safety and welfare of citizens in the USA. As the average American struggles to survive, the military is the biggest socialist entity in our nation.

By the way, if you want to see how vile the US military can be in the 21st century, I recommend the book “Generation Kill”, although the author gave a bullshit stance that it’s “neither pro-war nor anti-war.” Also read or watch anything about Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay Prison.

Sorry for being Captain Obvious, but basic training and boot camp trains soldiers to dehumanize others. It’s not surprising that a number of them become monsters after that, ready to beat up, rape, or kill anyone they see as beneath them. Violence in, violence out.
